Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease is a condition in which the gums, deeper supporting tissue, and potentially the bone surrounding teeth become infected and inflamed. The condition can be difficult to recognize in its early stages as it develops slowly without any real pain until swollen gums appear and bothers you. The bacteria generate volatile sulfur compounds by degrading sulfur containing amino acids present in the mouth, and the exhalation of the volatile sulfur compounds is perceived as bad breath. Bad breath and gum disease is being link with gum disease through volatile sulfur compounds.

Bacteria is the culprit of gum disease and they can be prevented with proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits with your dentist.

A number of individuals are suffering each year from gum and unfortunately it is being neglected at its early stage for symptoms comes painless. Gum infection is an inflammation of gums that is being primarily caused by plaque from bacteria. Excessive plaque build up can produce acids which are responsible for the inflammation of gums. Gum infection can spread below the gumline affecting the tissues and bones that supports the teeth thus it can result to tooth loose or eventually tooth loss.

Plaque should be removed to be prevented from gum infection and it can only be achieved with superior proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits about every six months are crucial to early identification of potential problems that could develop into more serious problems.

The leading cause of swollen gums and gum disease is dental plaque from bacteria.  Tartar starts to build up from excessive accumulation of plaque, and if not remove gum disease will develop and will eventually progress to advance periodontal disease. Plaque can be avoided and can be effectively removed with proper oral care, however if plaque already formed into tartar brushing and flossing is not enough to remove and it will need a scaling and polishing. Scaling and polishing is a non-invasive deep cleaning treatment for removal of plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth and it is being administered by a dental health care professional. It is recommended to have the treatment every six months to prevent bacteria build up and allows your dentist to detect the early signs of swollen gums and gum disease.
